Abstract

The world demand for energy will double by the middle of the 21st century. If we continue to use burning of fossil fuels as the primary energy source, this will also double our carbon dioxide emission. Eighty percent of our current global energy consumption comes from burning fossil fuels. This nearly exclusive reliance on burning carbon-based fuels causes increased pollution and global warming. It is a daunting challenge for human beings to find clean and abundant energy sources to meet the increasing global energy demand. In this talk, I am going to summarize our recent efforts in solar energy conversion; examples include: printable perovskite solar cells for solar-to-electricity conversion, water splitting and seawater splitting cells for solar-to-hydrogen conversion, photoreforming cells for solar-to-chemical conversion, CO2 reduction cells for CO2-to-chemical conversion, and etc.
